Is My Health Really a Priority?

An all too popular question. I’m going to explain why your health should be your biggest priority and how health will lead you to the life you want. Now, if you’re in a rough spot, first of all, do not feel guilty. This is a reality check not a guilt trip.

I have been around long enough, and read enough research, to know most people at some point (often on their death bed) gravely regret not focusing enough on their health. Degenerative diseases like cancer, diabetes, and heart disease are on the rise – even though they can be prevented far easier than people think by wise health and lifestyle choices. Some people may say their health is a top priority, but their actions and words aren’t always congruent.

Here are a few rhetorical questions to allow you to enter a state of self reflection; take your time with each one. Read the question and proceed by pondering your reasoning, remaining still, and questioning how you can change your current outcome to approach the life you have long desired:

  1. Do you catch yourself saying “I have no time for exercise” but you do have time to check Facebook, watch TV, surf the web, or “catch up on work?”
  2. Do you cancel health expenditures (such as chiropractic) when your insurance benefits run out, but you keep paying for things like a cell phone and internet? (Both are robbing you of health.)
  3. Do you skimp on groceries and buy the cheapest, less nutrient-dense food while continuing to subscribe to cable television or feed other, less important and expensive habits?
  4. Do you have a retirement plan to financially enjoy your future, but have yet to consider how to ensure your future health? What will be more important in 10, 20, or 40 years: health or money? How can you guarantee you will have your health? If you lost it, would even millions be worth it?

The reason I want you to reflect on these important questions is because I have seen where the results all too often lead. People who don’t prioritize and invest in their health regret it down the road. I can’t begin to count how many times I’ve had patients exclaim, “Dr Matt, I would give anything to be young again like you.” Nobody thinks they will be that person with cancer, limitations, diseases, canes, or walkers until it’s too late. Here’s the reality, 5/6 people needlessly suffer and die far earlier than is necessary. Five out of six. Where do you fit in that statistic and how does your life provide evidence to your claim?

Prioritizing your health now is your absolute best investment. Don’t get caught in the destructive ways of the world. Don’t axe out the important stuff to keep the things that rob you of what’s truly important in life.
